History of the college
Government arts college for women, Nilakottai dawned in the year 1998-
1999 as the result of the constant and continuous effort of the former MLA of the
Nilakottai constituency Mrs.A.S.Ponnammal.
Previously, it was a disturbing scenario in Nilakottai and hundreds of
villages around, Nilakottai that after their school education the girls inevitably had
to join in any of the private self financing colleges to pursue their higher education.
This fact was a distant dream quite nonrealistic to many because to join in a private
institution needed a lot of money to pay as fee caption and other forms of
expenses. For the poor rural girl students this mince a big ordeal hence many girls
could not continue their studies and their dream about higher education had come
to an abrupt end Mrs.Ponnammal wanted to put an end to this pathetic situation.
All her strenuous efforts culminated into a great success when the hon'ble chief
minister of Tamil Nadu Dr.M.Karunanidhi announced the inception of a new
Government Arts College for women in Nilakottai vide the GO NO 338 dated
17.07.1998.
With the generous contribution of Rs.50, 00,000 by Mrs.A.S.Ponnammal
from her Constituency Development Fund and Rs.50, 00,000 by the Hon'ble
Member of Parliament Mr.C.Srinivasan the foundation stone was laid.
Magnanimous personalities took part in the strong establishment of the
college renowned anthropologist Mr.A.Dhamodaran proprietor of Dhanalakshmi
Paper Mills contributed a sum of Rs.7,50,000/- .Dr.Chandra Bose a reputed doctor
and Mr.Dhanabal proprietor the gold soap company donated Rs.5,00,000 and
3,00,000 respectively for the development of the infrastructural facilities.
Subsequently the college was affiliated to MKU vide the Register’s No.:
CDC 2/FRA/GACW-N/98-99 dated 13.8.98. The Institution started functioning at
the Periyar-Vaigai scheme building belonging to PWD as there was no specific
accommodation for the college them. Initially only five under graduate courses
as that of BBA, B.Com, B.Sc (Home Science), B.Sc (Computer Science) and BA
Tamil literature were offered and 256 students were admitted in all. In
Nuthulapuram union, Kulathupati village on the Nilakottai- Batlagundu Main road
3km west from Nilakottai present building was constructed and the inaugurated by
the then Education minister Hon'ble Thambi Durai on 30.6.2002.The college
witnessed gradual but steady development when the hon'ble member of parliament
Mr.N.S.V.Sithan offered Rs.1000000 to build additional classrooms in the year
2004-2005.Then in the second phase during 2005-2006 Rs.4, 00,000 was given.
Later during 2007-2008 another 3, 00,000 was allotted for the construction of the
Auditorium.
The academic year 2004-2005 was a landmark in the history of the college.
It obtained 2F and 12B approval from the UGC on 23.6.2004. As another feat
NAAC peer committee visited the college on 21 st and 22 nd March 2005 and
accessed the all round development and performance. Recognizing the laudable
functioning of the college the NAAC accredited the Institution with 'B' Grade. It is
a boon for the further progress of the college. For Re-Accreditation the NAAC
peer committee visited the college again and accessed the performance of the
college from 11.3.2013 to 13.3.2013 and subsequently the college obtained 'B'
Grade. This visit and revisit of the NAAC Committee and the reaccreditation
itself reveals the admirable functioning of the college.
Then the Central Government scheme 'RUSA' the funding organization was
introduced during 2012-13.It is really a blessing for speedy development of
college. It allotted 2 Crores for the infrastructure development eight class rooms
and further expansion of laboratories, computer peripherals generator to ensure
Uninterrupted Power Supply are provided besides with the fund received from
UGC and from the Chief Minister MGR centenary celebration fund, the college
buildings are expanded with more class rooms and lab facilities to accommodate
more and more number of students in various UG, PG and Research programmes.
Presently the college offers 11 Undergraduate, 10 Postgraduate, 5 M.Phil
programmes and 5 Ph.D programmes in various disciplines.
Our campus is now bustling with academic activities. Around 2400 students
are studying in various courses. The college with the sincere and responsive faculty
and with able, the guidance of the principal is on the path of progress. It develops
with leaps and bounds.
